How long do custom orthotics last?

Most custom orthotics last between 2–5 years, depending on your activity levels, footwear, and how often they are worn. High-impact activities such as running or physically demanding jobs may cause orthotics to wear faster.

Do orthotics fit in all shoes?

Orthotics can be designed to fit a wide range of footwear including running shoes, work shoes, and casual shoes. Your podiatrist will consider the type of footwear you regularly wear when designing your orthotics to ensure the best possible fit and comfort. Occasionally the style of orthotic that is best for you may not fit into every shoe you own, so talk to your podiatrist for best orthotic design for your needs.

Will orthotics fix plantar fasciitis?

Custom orthotics are commonly prescribed to help treat plantar fasciitis. They support the arch of the foot and reduce strain on the plantar fascia, helping relieve heel pain and promote healing. There is no one magic bullet for healing any pain in the body as it depends on what are the underlying causes. Orthotics are a major contributor to healing and preventing future injuries, and works alongside your other treatments such as taping, stretching, strengthening and footwear.

How do I know if I need custom orthotics?

You may benefit from custom orthotics if you experience:

  • Persistent heel pain
  • Arch pain or foot fatigue
  • Pain when walking or running
  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Frequent foot or lower limb injuries

A podiatrist can assess your foot mechanics and gait to determine if orthotics are the right treatment for you.

Are custom orthotics better than store-bought insoles?

Over-the-counter insoles are designed for general use when excess function of your foot, ankle or knee is not the cause of your pain. Custom orthotics are made specifically for your feet after a detailed assessment which allows them to correct specific biomechanical problems and provide more effective long-term support.

How long does it take to get custom orthotics?

After your assessment and 3D foot scan, custom orthotics are typically ready within 1-2 weeks. Your podiatrist will then ensure they fit properly and make any necessary adjustments.

Do I need to wear orthotics all the time?

For best results, orthotics should be worn as often as possible in your everyday footwear. Your podiatrist will provide guidance on how to gradually increase wear time when you first start using them.

Can orthotics help with knee, hip, or back pain?

Yes if alignment issues are the cause. The feet form the foundation of the body and poor foot alignment can affect the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back. Custom orthotics help improve lower limb alignment, which may reduce strain and discomfort in these areas.

Are orthotics only for people with flat feet?

No. Orthotics can help people with flat feet, high arches, or normal arches if there are biomechanical issues affecting how the foot functions.

Do children need orthotics?

Children may benefit from orthotics if they have walking abnormalities, or frequent foot pain. A podiatrist can assess your child’s foot development and determine if orthotics are appropriate.

Are custom orthotics comfortable?

Custom orthotics should feel very comfortable. As they are designed specifically for your feet custom orthotics are typically very comfortable. If they are not feeling comfortable, this is an easy fix, as your podiatrist can make minor adjustments to suit your footwear or activity level. Most people experience improved support and reduced foot fatigue.

Can orthotics help with running injuries?

Custom orthotics are commonly used to help manage running-related injuries, including plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and knee pain. They improve foot mechanics and help reduce repetitive strain during running.
