How Your Custom Orthotics Are Made

From scan to finished device

When you receive a pair of custom orthotics, you only see the finished product that slides into your shoe. But behind the scenes there is a detailed process designed to create something unique for your feet.

At Stepping Out Podiatry, we use modern technology through our “In-shoe pressure” detection assessment, to guide our orthotic design to redistribute load over the foot, creating a custom orthotic designed and manufactured specifically for you.

Step 1: We capture your foot shape with a 3D scan

The first step starts with your feet.

Rather than using messy plaster casts, we use a 3D iPad scan to capture the shape of your foot. This technology creates a highly detailed digital model that shows the contours and structure of your feet.

The scan is quick, comfortable and helps us gather important information that can be used to build an orthotic designed around your individual needs.

No two feet are the same; which is why every scan is unique.

Step 2: We design your orthotic

Once your scan has been completed, we move into the design stage.

Using specialised software, we can customise the orthotic based on:

• Your foot shape

• The way you walk and move (visual assessment along with Medilogic In-shoe Pressure Technology)

• Areas of pain or discomfort

• Your activity level and footwear

This allows us to create an orthotic design specifically for your body and your goals.

Step 3: Precision milling begins

Once the design is complete, it is sent for manufacturing.

Your orthotic is then milled from a solid block of EVA material. EVA is a lightweight material commonly used in footwear because it provides cushioning, comfort, and support.

Rather than being made by hand, a precision milling machine carefully shapes the orthotic according to your personalised digital design.

This process allows for accuracy and consistency.

To finish the manufacturing process, a material cover is placed on top of your device. There are many factors on what type of cover is chosen ranging from allergies all the way to extra cushioning.

Step 4: Your orthotics are ready

The finished result is a custom-made orthotic designed specifically for your feet.

Orthotics help support your foot posture, reduce pressure on painful areas and improve comfort during everyday activities such as:

• Walking the dog

• Working long hours on your feet

• Exercise and sport

• Daily activities around home

Small changes under your feet can sometimes make a big difference to how your body feels.

Technology continues to improve the way we assess and manufacture orthotics, helping us provide a more accurate and personalised approach for every patient.
