Why does the back of my ankle feel tight in the morning?
Do you notice a tight, sore feeling at the back of your ankle when you first get out of bed? Those first few steps can feel uncomfortable, stiff, or even make you limp before things ease off.
This is a very common sign of Achilles tendinopathy – a condition that affects the strong band (tendon) at the back of your leg that connects your calf muscle to your heel.
Often, the stiffness improves after you walk around for a few minutes. But it’s a sign that your Achilles is irritated and needs attention.
What causes Achilles tendon pain?
Your Achilles can become sore when it is overworked and not given enough time to recover.
This can happen if you:
- Suddenly increase your walking, running, or exercise
- Have tight calf muscles
- Wear unsupportive or worn-out shoes
- Have feet that roll in too much when you walk
- Spend long hours standing or walking
- Carry extra body weight
Over time, these factors can place too much stress on the tendon.
Why is it worse in the morning?
When you’re asleep, your foot stays still for hours.
This causes the tendon to tighten up overnight. When you get up and put weight on it, the tendon is suddenly stretched — which is why it feels stiff, tight, or painful.
How can a podiatrist help?
A podiatrist will assess how your feet move, your footwear, and what may be causing the strain on your Achilles.
Your treatment plan may include:
- Simple exercises to strengthen and loosen your calf and Achilles
- Advice on the best shoes for your feet
- Orthotics to reduce strain on the tendon
- Small heel lifts to take pressure off the area
- Guidance on modifying activity so you can keep moving safely
Many people start to notice improvement within a few weeks once they begin the right treatment.
Don’t ignore the early signs
Achilles pain rarely settles on its own once it has been there for a while.
Getting treatment early can help reduce pain faster, prevent it from getting worse, and keep you active.
If you’re noticing stiffness or pain at the back of your ankle, our podiatrists can help you get back on your feet sooner.
