What happens at a musculoskeletal appointment at Stepping Out Podiatry?
If you’re dealing with pain in your feet, ankles, knees, or lower legs, a musculoskeletal (MSK) podiatry appointment is designed to find out why it’s happening and how we can help you feel better.
At Stepping Out Podiatry, we take the time to fully understand your problem and create a plan that fits your body, lifestyle, and goals — whether that’s getting back to sport, walking comfortably, or simply moving without pain.
Here’s what you can expect at your appointment.
1. A chat about your pain and your goals
Your appointment will start with a relaxed conversation. Your podiatrist will ask questions to understand what’s been going on, such as:
- When your pain started and what it feels like
- What activities make it better or worse
- Your work, sport, exercise, and daily routine
- The shoes you usually wear
- Any previous injuries, scans, or treatments
- What you’re hoping to get out of treatment
This helps us see the full picture — not just where it hurts, but how it’s affecting your life.
2. How you stand and walk
Next, we’ll look at how your feet and legs move when you’re standing and walking. This is called a gait and movement assessment.
We check things like:
- Foot posture and alignment
- How your feet move as you walk
- How your joints and muscles work together
Your podiatrist may also gently press around the sore area to help pinpoint the source of your pain.
3. Strength and movement checks
We’ll assess how strong and flexible your feet, ankles, and lower legs are. Strong, well-balanced muscles are key to reducing pain and preventing future injuries.
We may use VALD ForceFrame technology to:
- Measure your strength accurately
- Spot muscle imbalances
- Track your improvement over time
This gives us clear, objective information to guide your treatment.
4. In-shoe pressure testing (if needed – only available at the Landsborough clinic)
Sometimes we’ll ask you to walk with special sensors inside your shoes. This shows how pressure is distributed under your feet while you move.
This helps us:
- Identify areas taking too much load
- Assess whether your footwear is helping or hindering
- Decide if orthotics would be beneficial
5. Your personalised treatment plan
At the end of your assessment, your podiatrist will explain what’s causing your pain and talk you through a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.
This may include:
- Advice on supportive footwear
- Simple strengthening or mobility exercises
- Orthotics, if appropriate
- Tips on managing activity and load
- Referral for imaging if needed
You’ll have plenty of time to ask questions and understand the next steps.
